Hide old tags from autocomplete when adding a new post

Some tags like 'Drupal 6' are old and won't have any new posts, but rather than deleting them, could they be hidden from the autocomplete list so that the list of options to choose from is shorter and more relevant?

There is a Status field on the taxonomy term now, but unpublishing a term hides the term page and also doesn't stop the tag from being referenced in an entity reference field, so this doesn't work for this use case.
